Description Psalter, of the first half of the 12th cent., written for a community of nuns [cf. picture prefixed to litany, showing nuns at prayer] - perhaps Markyate or Sopwell, each of which was set up under the auspices of St Albans abbey; adapted for St Albans abbey, by the addition of ff. 9-36, perhaps in the time of Abbot Geoffrey (1119-47). The calendar (ff. 1-8) has about twenty obits, of Christina of Markyate (d. in or after 1155) and her family and friends. The name of Roger the Hermit (d. c. 1121x23) has been added by another hand, and so both parts of the psalter perhaps predate 1123 [as suggested by Pcht, Dodwell and Wormald]; but in that case they would also predate the foundation of Markyate (1145).
